A cut-and-sew factory builds a garment from fabric that already exists, then cuts the pattern pieces and sews them together. For sweaters, the right choice depends on whether the design is driven by yarn structure or by fabric, silhouette and sewing construction.

What is the simple answer?

A knitwear factory is usually the better choice for true sweaters, cardigans and knitted pullovers because the garment is developed from yarn into knitted structure. A cut-and-sew factory is usually the better choice for sweatshirt-style tops, fleece pullovers, jersey tops and sweater-look garments made from pre-made fabric.

In production terms, a knitwear factory controls the sweater at the yarn and stitch level. A cut-and-sew factory controls the garment at the fabric, pattern and sewing level. Both can produce premium garments, but they solve different problems.

Which factory should brands contact first?

Choose a knitwear factory when the sweater needs custom yarn, gauge, cable, rib, intarsia, jacquard, fully fashioned shaping or linked seams.

Choose a cut-and-sew factory when the style uses pre-made knit fabric, fleece, jersey, French terry or a fabric-based silhouette with sewing, washing, printing or embroidery.

How do the two factory types compare in real sweater production?

This comparison is useful before sampling, because many development mistakes happen when the design team uses sweater language but the tech pack is actually written like a sewn garment.

A cut-and-sew factory starts with fabric rolls. The pattern is graded, the fabric is laid and cut, panels are sewn together, and the garment is finished with ribs, trims, print, embroidery, washing or pressing. This method is strong for streetwear silhouettes where fabric handfeel and sewing shape matter more than knitted stitch design.

Why does this difference matter before sampling?

The wrong factory type can make a good design feel wrong. A jacquard sweater sent to a sewing-led factory may lose stitch clarity. A fleece pullover sent to a true knitwear factory may become slower or more expensive than needed. The decision should be made before yarn, fabric and sample cost are confirmed.

Which factory should a streetwear brand choose for a sweater collection?

For streetwear brands, the clearest rule is to look at what creates the visual identity of the garment. If the design language comes from knitted texture, yarn color, rib structure or artwork knitted into the garment, a knitwear factory is usually the right route. If the design language comes from oversized pattern shape, heavyweight fabric, washing, print placement, embroidery or trims, a cut-and-sew factory may be more practical.

When is knitwear production the better fit?

Before choosing a factory, these questions usually give a clearer answer than simply asking whether a supplier “makes sweaters.” They help separate true knitwear capability from general garment sewing capability.

Does the design depend on yarn or fabric?

If the design depends on yarn, gauge and stitch, ask for knitwear capability. If it depends on fabric GSM, shape and sewing, ask for cut-and-sew capability.

Should the graphic be knitted or decorated?

A jacquard or intarsia graphic belongs to knitwear development. A printed, embroidered or appliqué graphic usually belongs to cut-and-sew planning.

Does the fit need knitted shaping?

Fully fashioned shoulders, ribbed body shaping and linked seams need knitting knowledge. Oversized cut, panel seams and garment wash need strong pattern and sewing control.

Can one supplier manage both routes?

Some OEM partners coordinate both knitwear and cut-and-sew development. The important point is whether they review the design technically before confirming the sample route.

What does this look like in a real sweater development case?

A common streetwear example is an oversized graphic pullover. If the artwork is a large all-over motif with different yarn colors, the production team will normally treat it as a knitwear project and check gauge, yarn count, jacquard feasibility, edge stability and linking. The artwork must be translated into a knit map, not only a print file.

If the same pullover uses heavyweight French terry, a boxy body, dropped shoulders, rib hem, screen print and vintage wash, it is closer to cut-and-sew production. The important checks become fabric shrinkage, pattern balance, seam bulk, print durability and wash effect.
